چکیده
This article aims to understand the development of diachronic asymmetries in phonological systems by evaluating variability stability synchronic contrasts. We focus on sonorant involving secondary palatalisation, grounded claim that palatalised laterals are more common than rhotics cross-linguistically. Our analysis reports acoustic and articulatory data Scottish Gaelic, a Celtic language with large inventory contrasting palatalised, plain velarised phonemes across laterals, nasals rhotics. summarise high-dimensional dynamic characteristics spectrum midsagittal tongue shape using two-stage reduction process use these coefficients as inputs for training Support Vector Machine. trained model classifies unseen terms its phonemic identity, which reveals classified best word-initially worst word-finally, always better laterals. find information substantially improves classification, but only classification some sonorants. propose variable palatalisation contrasts complicates potential trajectories change Gaelic.

metathesis as a phonological phenomenon in order to reverse segments has been focus of many studies. metathesis according to the range of application can be sporadic or regular. it links synchronic studies of language to diachronic ones and thereby has some consequences for phonological theory. the central goal of this paper is to elucidate the conditions under which metathesis occurs synchroni...
متن کاملPhysical Emergence, Diachronic And Synchronic
This paper explicates two notions of emergence which are based on two ways of distinguishing levels of properties for dynamical systems. Once the levels are defined, the strategies of characterizing the relation of higher level to lower level properties as diachronic and synchronic emergence are the same. In each case, the higher level properties are said to be emergent if they are ‘novel’ or ‘...
متن کاملPejoratives and Relevance: Synchronic and Diachronic Issues
The paper considers a possible relevantist treatment, in the spirit of Wilson and Sperber’s work, of pejoratives and argues for three claims concerning them. On the level of synchronic issues it suggests that the negative content of pejoratives, at least in its minimal scope, is the normal part of their lexical meaning, and not a result of extra-semantic enrichment. It thus suggests an evaluati...
